The woman froze.
The boy reached into his worn backpack and pulled out an old photograph. Its corners were torn, and one side was stained.
When she saw it, the color drained from her face.
It showed her years ago—crying beside a man who was gripping her little sister’s arm.
She remembered that night.
Her father had dragged her away from a train station while her sister screamed. A man promised he would take the girl somewhere safe.
She believed she could return the next morning.
But by then, her sister was gone.
“She thought I abandoned her,” the woman whispered.
The boy’s eyes hardened.
“She said you watched.”
The words cut deeper than anything else.
“I was nineteen,” she said through tears. “I was terrified. I thought I could come back. But she disappeared before I had the chance.”
“Is she alive?” the woman asked.
The boy slowly pulled an old hospital wristband from his backpack.
Their mother’s name was still visible.
The little girl began crying.
“She said if we ever found you…”
Her brother finished:
“She said not to forgive you too quickly.”
The woman lowered her head.
“She was right.”
For a moment, the market noise returned around them.
Then the little girl raised her wrist, showing the broken angel bracelet.
“If you’re really her sister… why did Mom keep your bracelet?”
The woman stared at the missing silver wing on her own wrist.
Her voice trembled.
“Because she hated me…”
She swallowed, tears filling her eyes.
“But she still wanted you to find me.”
