The Groom’s Last Toast

Evan and Claire’s wedding was supposed to be the event of the year, but it turned into a nightmare. In the heat of the banquet, Evan stepped into the center of the hall, holding a worn-out denim jacket belonging to little Lily, his bride’s daughter from her first marriage.

“A thief at my wedding? How touching!” Evan laughed loudly, addressing the guests. “It seems our little guest decided to help herself to my family cufflinks.”

Lily burst into tears, clutching her mother’s dress. “Mommy, I didn’t take them!” she cried through her sobs.

Evan’s mother, a haughty woman in a satin dress, added snidely: “Evan, control your stepdaughter. We won’t tolerate theft in our family.”

Claire pulled her daughter close, her eyes burning with a cold fire. She looked at her now-husband, who was relishing the humiliation of the child.
“Don’t come near my daughter,” she whispered.

At that moment, wanting to end his speech with a flourish, Evan struck a massive pyramid of champagne glasses with his hand. The crystal crashed to the floor with a roar, drenching the marble and the bride’s dress.

“That’s what happens when you raise a thief!” Evan shouted, not noticing the change in Claire’s expression.

She leaned down to her daughter, kissed her forehead, and looked at Evan with a gaze that sent a chill down his spine.
“You touched the wrong little girl, Evan…”

The sound of shattering glass still echoed in the hall. The guests froze, staring at the crystal shards and spilled champagne. Evan stood with a smug grin, confident in his victory. He thought this public humiliation would finally break Claire and rid him of the “burden” that was her child.

“You should apologize to my mother and the guests for this disgrace, Claire,” Evan said arrogantly, straightening his bow tie.

Claire stood up slowly. She didn’t cry. She didn’t scream. She simply looked at him as if she were looking at a pile of trash.

“You know, Evan,” she began in a quiet but clear voice that carried across the entire room. “You were always too self-assured. You thought that because you were rich, you could rewrite reality to suit yourself.”

She slowly raised her hand and pointed to the ceiling, right above the entrance to the hall. There, hidden behind the decorative molding, flickered the small red dot of a security camera.

“This is a private area,” Claire continued. “My father owns this hotel, and he installed the latest generation security system here. The cameras record not just video, but high-definition sound as well.”

Evan froze for a moment, his smirk wavering. “So what? It’ll just confirm that your daughter is a thief.”

Claire pulled out her smartphone and made a few quick taps on the screen. “I just accessed the cloud storage for the last 20 minutes. Shall we watch together?”

She walked over to the large projector meant for their “happy moments” slideshow and connected her phone. The hall dimmed. A video appeared on the screen.

The recording clearly showed that ten minutes ago, when Lily had left her jacket on a chair to get some juice, Evan had approached it. Glancing around, he pulled the “missing” cufflinks from his trouser pocket and carefully tucked them into the pocket of the child’s jacket. The video captured his face perfectly—he was smiling as he did it.

The hall erupted in whispers. Evan’s mother, who had been accusing the child seconds ago, now tried to hide behind the guests.

“You planted them, Evan,” Claire turned to him. “You staged this circus to brand my five-year-old daughter a criminal in front of all your influential friends. But you forgot one detail.”

She stepped forward and ripped the veil from her head, throwing it directly into the pool of champagne.
“I never forgive those who touch my daughter.”

“Claire, it… it was just a joke! To teach her a lesson!” Evan tried to grab her arm, but Claire pushed him away.

“The lesson is over.” She turned to the guests. “Ladies and gentlemen, the wedding is canceled. The banquet continues, but without the ‘groom’ or his family. Security, escort these people out.”

Two large security guards, employed by Claire’s father, immediately approached Evan. He was led out to the sound of hisses and boos from the very people he had tried to impress. His mother tried to protest, but a guest—a prominent businessman—simply blocked her path with the words: “You are no longer welcome here.”

When the hall was cleared of Evan’s family, Claire knelt back down in front of Lily. The little girl was no longer crying; she was looking at her mother with admiration.

“Are we going home?” Lily asked.
“No, honey,” Claire smiled and wiped the last tears from her daughter’s face. “We’re staying. This is our party. We’re going to eat cake, dance, and celebrate the fact that we got the trash out of our lives just in time.”

That evening, Claire didn’t become a wife, but she became a legend. And Lily’s denim jacket now hung in their home as a reminder: the truth always finds a way out, especially when a mother is standing behind it, ready to tear down the world for her child.

Evan never appeared in high society again. The camera footage “accidentally” leaked online, and now every time he tried to get a job or make a connection, the first thing people saw was his face planting cufflinks into a little girl’s pocket.

Honesty, much like the champagne that night, proved to be far too expensive for him.
